The Mandatory "Well"

In Answering Questions

Have you ever noticed that answers to questions on TV seem to always start with, "Well?"

"Well, to tell the truth, I haven't noticed that."

"It almost seems like it's some sort of an unwritten law."

"Well, I doubt if there is a law. You don't really believe that, do you?"

"Well, who can be sure what they teach in broadcasting schools these days. Why else would people do it?

"Well, think about it. Don't you think we do a lot of things that can't be explained.?"

"Well, I'm sure psychologists have an explanation."

"Well, frankly, I doubt if they really know."

Would it really change anything if all the "wells" were eliminated?
