Meth: the Quick, Crash-and-Burn Drug

There are things in life that intelligent people stay away from.

Rattlesnakes and scorpions come immediately to mind. Even though the consequences of crossing one of these critters are bad, you will probably survive  -- and will have learned a valuable lesson about avoiding them in the future.

It also helps that rattlesnakes and scorpions aren't very inviting to look at; and to their credit, rattlesnakes even give you fair warning before striking.

Meth (methamphetamine) is far more deceptive.

It can give you an euphoric high, but it alters your brain chemistry and over time your physical appearance -- for the worse.

It is more addictive than heroine and even harder to "kick." (Most people can't -- ever.) Psychiatrist Stephan Arndt calls it the "crash-and-burn drug." Treatment centers in many states are being overwhelmed by people desperately seeking help.

Bottom line: There are some things in life, like rattlesnakes, scorpions, and meth, that intelligent people just avoid.

Possibly the word is getting out.  After a yearly increase in use, in 2006 there was a slight drop in the use of meth in the United States.
